Van Hoeck – Noël

Baasrode (Dendermonde), on the Schippersdijk – Domien Van Hoeck (59) has been sitting in the asphalt his entire life as a road worker. Long days and long hours. He pulled just in time the “raceme” of reretirement on the fair mill of life. His entire life he “played” with the pigeons. No big intentions: winning a prize, drinking some beer en talking about pigeons. He has always been a very satisfied man. “Asked little, got a lot”, Stijn Streuvels said once. A happy and content human always believes he has got too much, he thinks his pot of beer is half full in stead of half empty. And when you, besides all this, you also have a fellow, a faithful “font” when the pigeons return back home, he contributes with signing in of the pigeons and “putting”, than you don’t have to go from the Skippersdijk to Monaco to see blue skies?

Eddy Noël , Herzele and at a half Tour of Flanders finally ended up in Baasrode. His entire previous life in Zemst, he’s been working with pigeons. Obsessed and very successful, but also because of an accident he started with horse riding as therapy. And than there’s also the “third wheel on the bench”: Albert Leon, his colleague and fond his lives right next Eddy in the Baasrodestreet. During summer nights in the garden he talked about the weather, taxes, … and beautiful girls which drove by on their bicycles with nude belly buttons … and in accidental occasions also about pigeons; Domien’s pigeons who came home from betting flights but never on time.

Albert was pretty surprised when he found out his neighbour knew something about pigeons. “And wondered if Eddy wouldn’t come with Domien to the Skippersdike to watch the pigeons?” And Eddy, always laughing and still obsessed with pigeons, came along with Domien and his Irma. That first visite has become a tight friendship… three men and a woman, enough to play cards… even better to have fun along and to talk about pigeons and everything around it.

This friendship guided on short notice to a colony of pigeons. This colony flew the past few years not only on Noyonflights (180 km) in this area, but also standed out some fireworks on long distances. But there was always some respect for other amateurs who didn’t leave without any notice to other flights.

It has been different in earlier years: Domien played only with the pigeons for fun. It was like someone who played an old discarded piano with one finger and a really bad rhythm but still thought he was an excellent pianist.

Eddy soon realised that, when the results were good, some things needed to be different. In the end, Domien and Irma were more interested in the prizes than in the pigeons who were always late, they agreed immediately to get rid of their old habits. Noël jumped in the car and searched for an old sorts he has played with in the past: pigeons from Louis Van Paesschen (Humbeek) and Eric Limbourg (Brussegem). On a total sale he bought a “doffer” from the brothers Santens and with his friends the brothers Delellio (Vilvoorde) he had two grandsons and three granddaughters of their “159”e pigeon, who flew the first National Bourges. A son of the first interprovincial Vierzon and a grandson of the first interprovincial Argenton were also found by his old friends from the community of Brabants draught horses. To make the team complete, he also bought a granddaughter of the millionaire of Raoul and Xavier Verstrate from the Flemish community of Lourdes.

They had to improve some characteristics before the train could leave the station: making sheds, make sure the feathers are of a fine quality and improve their nutrition. And than, the train left! For more than a decade, they produced pigeons of high quality. Their friendship still stands like a rock, making lots of fun and with a lot of laughter but now the good results are also a part of this. The pigeons gained good result on Noyonflight and in local unions in “The Land of Aalst”, where, to say it in hard words, they prefer the Baasrode team in losing positions. The time when they played the old piano is behind them for several years now. Domien and Eddy now play an entire season with virtuoso hands on their concert wing. Albert Leon and Irma are deeply listening.

Truce and cultivation

24 pigeons and 24 female pigeons are played on a total widowship on short distance, middle distance and dayfondflights (200-450-700 km)/ 12 pigeons are played on a “classic” widowship on fondflights. The young gard counts approximately 100 pieces who are partially played on short distance and the “nationals”. About 24 breeding couples make sure the offspring is assured. They were formed out of parents, brothers and sisters of the best flying pigeons. To make sure fast inbreeding wasn’t an issue, they provided the couples with “fresh” pigeons that were coupled to own inbreed products. This was an attempt to adjust and improve the race. With that goal in mind, they got grandson Queen-L from Houben (Itegem), Van Hove Uytterhoeven (Putte) J. en J. Engels, (Putte) P. en J. Roziers, (Berlaar) and with Paul and Marcel Albrecht.

Sheds

Domien had a lot of work with the sheds. They are built at the backside of the house: de sun only reaches the sheds after noon. The entire day it’s a cold, wettish an chilly environment. The pigeons only got in shape after longer warmer and drier periods. At certain times he had some problems. More glass in the roof was one solution but it wasn’t enough. That’s why the sheds were prepared with a ventilation system and heating-mats. The working of all this was linked to a thermostat and a hygrostat to make sure the temperature and the wetness were under control.

Medication

Medication is only given after the advice of a veterinarian and they are very careful in prescribing it. Following medication is prescribed: 

• Colostrum because of the antibodies against several infections.
• Apple vinegar: bacteriums find it harder to survive in a sour invironment.
• Biograde Yoghurt because of the living lactic acid.
• Biacidol, a probiotic.
• silverwater: a natural antibiotic
• Sedochol: “cleaning” remedy to help to form the shape.
• Tea of humus: living micro-organisms
• Soup: homemade soup based on celery, onions, garlic, sugars, iodine.
• A tea for the lungs
• Profiteck: powder to help the bowels
• Lecithin and an omega 3-6-9 oil
• Vitamins are almost never necessary
• A  lot of oxygen in the shes and have patience, when the shape isn’t there: resting and staying home
